Singbomey is the historic quarter of the De Souza family in Ouidah, located at Place Chacha. It houses the Chacha palace, a hereditary title descending from Francisco Félix De Souza (1754-1849), a Brazilian merchant who became West Africa's largest slave trader. The site includes the ancestor's tomb and family memorial. Singbomey symbolizes the complex history of the Agoudas, this mixed community maintaining a singular cultural identity blending African and Brazilian influences, and continuing to play an important role in Ouidah's cultural life and traditional Vodun ceremonies.
