At just 3,245 km², Grand Accra is the smallest of Ghana's sixteen regions by area, yet the most populous: the 2021 census recorded 5,455,692 residents, or 17.7% of the national population. Built around the capital city of Accra, the region is also the country's most urbanised, with 87.4% of residents living in towns and cities. It hosts the seat of government, Kotoka International Airport, and the bulk of Ghana's banking and industrial activity. The Ga people, the coast's earliest inhabitants, remain culturally dominant there, notably through the annual Homowo festival. The region also concentrates the country's main ports, markets and free-trade zones.
