Active since the sixteenth century, Jamestown is the historic home of Accra's Ga fishing community. Below its colonial 28-metre lighthouse, dugout canoes and drying nets still define the shoreline. But catches are collapsing: foreign-backed industrial trawlers drag the seabed offshore, illegally targeting small pelagic species. On land, plastics and organic waste saturate the waterfront. A Chinese-funded mechanised harbour project now threatens to erase what centuries of maritime tradition have built.
