Ouidah, Benin. New Gate of No Return. Wide view from the inland esplanade, sandy ground in the foreground. Two passersby, one balancing an object on their head, provide a human sense of scale for this monument set against the open landscape of Djègbadji beach. The long solar-lit esplanade stretches toward the town of Ouidah, historic starting point of the Slave Route connecting the city center to the beach and the Atlantic. To the right, coconut palms and buildings under development signal the construction of the future La Marina memorial complex. January 2026.
