Description:
Baalbek, Lebanon. Archaeological site of the ancient city. Temple of Jupiter or Baal - Jupiter Heliopolitanus. With the exception of the great temple at Tarsus, the Temple of Jupiter at Baalbek is the largest in the Roman world. It was built over an area of 4,224 square metres. The six remaining monumental pillars (22m/72.18ft height) give an idea about the temple's greatness. The entablature of the temple was decorated with sculptured lion heads. Here is the base of the temple built with gigantic stones - 250 cubic metres and an average of eight hundred tonnes per stone. Fragments of columns broken by earthquakes can be seen.
