Description:
Ouidah, Benin. Slave Route. A figurative sculpture from the original Door of No Return monument complex, displaced on the reconstruction site in 2025. The figure — seated, gaze lifted toward the sky — represents an enslaved person. Green paint flakes away in patches, exposing raw layers of rust, lime and time. Scattered rubble, red sand and concrete blocks surround the isolated form. The bright green corrugated metal fence of the construction site creates a stark chromatic counterpoint to this solitary, weathered presence — a witness to a memory suspended between demolition and rebirth.
