Description:
Ouidah, Benin. Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. Interior view from the chancel towards the entrance façade. The plunging perspective reveals the full length of the central nave — 58 metres —, punctuated by lateral bays and colonnades that draw the eye toward the entrance portal. The coffered vault on a metal frame, rising to 17.5 metres, structures the vertical space. Lateral stained glass windows cast subdued light across the wooden pews. Consecrated in 1909 and elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1989, the building exemplifies the Neo-Gothic European style transposed to West Africa.
