Florence, Italy. Florence. Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (Saint Mary of the Flower - in reference to the Lily of Florence). Built between 1296 and 1436. Consecrated March 8th, 1436. Designed by architect Arnolfo di Cambio (1240-1310), Santa Maria del Fiore is one the largest churches in Europe: 153 meters long, 41.98 meters large. The dome, conceived by architect Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446), is still the largest brick dome in the world. The Cathedral is on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1982.
