Istanbul, Turkey. The Basilica Cistern or Yerebatan Sarnıcı. Built in the VIth century during the reign of emperor Justinian I, the cistern was used to save water for the summer seasons. It is the largest of many cisterns. It measures 138 meters by 64,6 meters and can contain up to 78000 cubic meters of water. 336 marble columns support the ceiling of the edifice. Two of those pillars have bases made out of blocks with carved Medusa faces.
