Description:
Paris,France. The Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, meaning "Our Lady of Paris" and commonly called Notre-Dame, is a medieval catholic cathedral situated on the Île de la Cité in the fourth arrondissement of Paris. It's construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and achieved in 1345. Notre-Dame was desecrated and damaged during the French revolution years, starting 1789. An important restoration took place between 1844 and 1864. This sometimes considered controversial restauration project was supervised by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc and added novel elements to the edifice, making it somewhat disharmonious. Notre-Dame is one of the major symbols of Paris. In the evening of April 15th, 2019 a major fire destroys the roof, the XIIIth century woodwork and the flèche of Viollet-le-Duc - the timber spire situated over the crossing.
