Paris, France. Place Denfert-Rochereau. The Lion of Belfort. This sculpture is the work of Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904). This copper sculpture is a one-third-scale replica (7x4 meters) of the Lion of Belfort stone sculpture in Belfort, Lorraine. This replica was erected in 1880 and symbolizes the resistance of Colonel Denfert-Rochereau during the siege of Belfort between 1870 and 1871 (Franco-Prussian war). A bronze medaillon with the Colonel's effigy was added in 1920. The sculpture was classified as a national heritage site in 2003.
